Ingredients

  • For the Meat Sauce:
  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef (or Italian sausage)
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 can (14 oz) tomato sauce
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • For the Béchamel Sauce (White Sauce):
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups (500ml) milk
  • ½ tsp nutmeg (optional)
  • Salt, to taste
  • For Layering:
  • 12 lasagna noodles (pre-cooked or oven-ready)
  • 2 cups (200g) shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ½ cup (50g) grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 cup ricotta cheese (optional, for extra creaminess)

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Meat Sauce

  1. Heat a large pan over medium heat and add ground beef. Cook until browned.
  2. Add onions and garlic, sautéing until soft.
  3. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper.
  4. Simmer for 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 2: Make the Béchamel Sauce

  1. In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat.
  2. Stir in flour and cook for 1-2 minutes, whisking constantly.
  3. Slowly add milk, whisking until smooth and thickened.
  4. Add nutmeg and salt. Set aside.

Step 3: Cook the Lasagna Noodles

  1. If using regular lasagna noodles, cook according to package instructions.
  2. Drain and lay them flat on parchment paper to prevent sticking.

Step 4: Assemble the Lasagna

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Spread a thin layer of meat sauce at the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  3. Layer noodles, meat sauce, béchamel, mozzarella, and ricotta. Repeat until all ingredients are used.
  4. Top with Parmesan and extra mozzarella.

Step 5: Bake & Serve

  1. Cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove foil and bake for another 10-15 minutes until golden.
  2. Let it rest for 10 minutes before slicing.
  3. Serve warm and enjoy your classic homemade lasagna.
