Ingredients

  • For the Pizza Dough:
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast
  • 1 ½ cups warm water (110°F / 43°C)
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano (optional)
  • For the Toppings:
  • 1 cup tomato sauce (preferably homemade or a good-quality pizza sauce)
  • 8 oz (225g) fresh mozzarella cheese, sliced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (for drizzling)
  • Fresh basil leaves
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

Make the Pizza Dough

  1. In a small bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Stir gently and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until the yeast becomes foamy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, olive oil, salt, and oregano (if using).
  3. Pour the yeast mixture into the flour mixture and stir until a dough forms.
  4. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-1.5 hours, or until it has doubled in size.

Step 2: Prepare the Pizza

  1. Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C) and place a pizza stone or baking sheet inside to heat up.
  2. Punch down the dough and divide it into 2 equal portions (for two small pizzas).
  3. Roll out one portion of the dough on a floured surface into a 12-inch circle.
  4. Transfer the dough to a parchment paper-lined pizza peel or baking sheet.

Step 3: Add the Toppings

  1. Spread a thin layer of tomato sauce over the dough, leaving a small border around the edges.
  2. Arrange the mozzarella slices evenly on top of the sauce.
  3. Drizzle with a little olive oil and season with salt and pepper to taste.

Step 4: Bake the Pizza

  1. Carefully slide the pizza onto the preheated pizza stone or bake it on the baking sheet.
  2. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the crust is golden and the cheese is bubbly and slightly browned.

Step 5: Garnish and Serve

  1. Remove the pizza from the oven and immediately top with fresh basil leaves.
