What is custard?
Custard is a rich, creamy dessert that is prepared by mixing milk or cream with eggs, sugar, and flavorings such as vanilla. It is either thickened by eggs or a starch-based substitute like custard powder or cornstarch. Custards can be made in various manners, leading to different textures and consistencies. Baked custards, including crème brûlée and flan, are set and firm when baked, whereas stirred custards like pastry cream and crème anglaise are stovetop-cooked and pourable with a soft texture. Others, such as panna cotta, employ gelatin as a thickener and are served cold. Custard has numerous applications across desserts as the filling for a pastry, cake topping, or as a topping in trifles and puddings. It also serves as an excellent dessert enjoyed hot or cold and is many times garnished with fruits, nuts, or caramel. Being such a flexible and tasty confection, the world adores custard, and it has become a staple in many places.
